About Dehradun
Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is a valley, covered by the Himalayas in the North & surrounded by the Shivalik Hills in the South, with holy Ganga in the East and Yamunaon its West.
Dehradun was also known as ‘Drona Nagri’ because Dronacharya, the great teacher of Kauravas & Pandawas lived & worshipped here.
Dehradun derives its name from ‘Dera,’ meaning camp or settlement & ‘Dun’ longitudinal valley. Seventh Sikh Guru Har Rai set up ‘Dera’ in Dun in 1676. This ‘Dera’ Dun later became Dehradun. His eldest son, Guru Ram Rai established Darbar Sahib at Dhamawala in 1707, which even today hosts the annual ‘Jhanda Fair’ on the 5th day after Holi in his memory.
